"As a journalist I dare to be different," said Brandon Oliver, copy chief for Florida A&M University's student newspaper, The Famuan . "I want to be set apart."
And Oliver holds great responsibility at his campus publication.
"There is no time for me to join other student organizations," said the 21-year-old graduating senior. "I have to be there when the stories come in. Sometimes that means I don't get into the (newspaper) office until late."
When asked if he felt he'd be missing out on the college experience because of his dedication to the paper, Oliver said, "I came to college to get a job. That's not going to happen if I don't focus on my field. It's all worth it."
After his December graduation, Oliver said he hopes to attend Florida State University to pursue a master's degree in creative writing, which he hopes will add to his goal of becoming a fiction writer.
"I don't just want to be a copy editor forever," he said. "I want to spice things up."
